A wonderfully expressive pair of antique recumbent Staffordshire lions, hand-painted in rich burnt orange, black and earthy green glazes.
Dating to approximately 1890–1910, each lion rests against a naturalistic rocky base and retains its original glass eyes. Their slightly eccentric expressions and individual hand-finished details give the pair enormous character.
Designed as a matched mantel pair, the lions face inward when displayed together. Substantial in size and presence, they make a striking addition to a mantel, sideboard or collected interior.
Both lions present beautifully, with surface wear, glaze variation and signs of age consistent with more than a century of life. One lion has a shallow surface chip and a fine line crack to the underside of the base. It has been on display as is for some time with no issues and the integrity of the lion does not appear to be affected other than the appearance of the base which is not visible on display. Priced as is, these areas have been photographed and should be reviewed carefully as part of the condition description.
